Buchmann Galerie – presents Nigel Cooke in a solo show at the Gallery Weekend

Buchmann Galerie is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by Nigel Cooke in Germany.

Nigel Cooke (* 1973 in Manchester, lives and works in London and Kent) is one of the most prominent painters of his generation. His large-format tableaus captivate with breathtaking combinations of figurative and abstract elements. Cooke creates emblematic contemporary landscape depictions, epic paintings of an abandoned and imagined world. Cooke’s hybrid theatrical spaces in toxic colors are populated by haunting figures whose mysteriousness and presence can be read as symbols of modern life.

In Nigel Cooke’s current works, the artist proceeds from his authentic experiences and visited landscapes. The artist interweaves memories of these places and moments with thoughts on the nature of creativity, with reactions to historical paintings or literary works. Nigel Cooke’s attempt to create a super-personal panopticon, rich in references and yet highly subjective, creates works that feed on the artist’s and the viewer’s memories, exquisite, opulent, dangerous, and chasing the sublime.

Nigel Cooke’s work is represented in numerous public collections, including the Tate, London; British Council, London; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Dallas Museum of Art; Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
